CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois senior softball player Jayna Spivey earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-District V first team, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Thursday. The senior second baseman earns the second Academic All-District honor of her career, having also earned the distinction last year. Her First-Team designation makes her a candidate for Academic All-America, which will be announced later this month.

    Spivey holds a 3.76 GPA in biological sciences and is a two-time first-team MVC Scholar-Athlete team selection. She is a three-time All-MVC player and earned first-team All-Conference recognition in 2011 and 2013.

This year, Spivey leads the Valley and ranks 19th nationally in doubles per game, and her 17 doubles so far this year has already broken SIU's single-season doubles record. She has 145 career RBIs, which is also an SIU record and ranks sixth in MVC history. Her career numbers put her in the top-10 in school history in hits, at-bats, runs scored, doubles and home runs, in addition to RBIs. In addition, she's put up single-season numbers that rank in the top-10 at SIU in runs scored, doubles, home runs (twice), RBIs and walks.

Spivey is having an especially impressive senior campaign. She leads the team in hits, doubles, slugging percentage and batting average. She is hitting .353 as a senior to push her lifetime batting average up to .302. She ranks in the top-10 in the MVC in 10 offensive categories and is top-five in the Valley in six of those categories.

The CoSIDA Academic All-District team honors 11 players from eight districts across the nation. Spivey earned District V honors, which includes all Division I universities in the stats of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Michigan. All of the Academic All-District honorees are immediately candidates for Academic All-American recognition, which will be announced at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 22.
