The Salukis host Indiana State on May 3-4. SIU will hold senior day for its five seniors--Kelsea Ashton, Michelle Glenn, Taylor Orsburn, Jayna Spivey and Allie VadeBoncouer--at the conclusion of Saturday's doubleheader, which starts at noon. Both games of Saturday's doubleheader will be on 1300 WFRX in Carbondale, with Bryce Williams handling play-by-play duties.

    Southern Illinois has...

    • Won nine of its last 11 MVC games and 10 of 12 overall
    • Won six-straight home games
    • Won four-straight MVC series and five MVC series overall
    • Allowed four or fewer runs in 10 of the last 11 games
    • Won eight-straight games when scoring six or more runs
    • Has not played Indiana State since 2012
    • Won 26 of the 28 meetings between the schools since 2004

SIU is hosting Senior Day on Saturday and will honor its five seniors, Kelsea Ashton, Michelle Glenn, Taylor Orsburn, Jayna Spivey and Allie VadeBoncouer. The festivities to honor one of the best senior classes in school history will take place immediately following the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. Also at Saturday's game, SIU will provide free barbecue and beverages while supplies last beyond the left-field fence.

The Salukis are facing a somewhat unfamiliar foe after having not faced Indiana State in 2013 due to weather. SIU has dominated the overall series between the two schools winning 69 of the 85 games. In the last 10 years, SIU is 26-2 against the Sycamores, with Indiana State getting a win in 2009 and a win in 2012.

Southern Illinois has been one of the hottest teams in the Valley, along with Illinois State. SIU has won nine of its last 11 MVC games and 10 of its last 12 games overall after playing within two games of the .500 mark for the first 38 games of the year. Southern went to Wichita State last weekend to face the then-first-place Shockers and took two of three games.

Indiana State has lost five of its last seven games, all of which have been in MVC play. The Sycamores have lost three-straight MVC series to Loyola, Bradley and Drake after taking two of three from Missouri State. Despite losing all three series, Indiana State has won at least one game in four-straight series and five of its last six, having only been swept against UNI and Wichita State this year.

    Did you know?
SIU's five-member senior class of Kelsea Ashton, Michelle Glenn, Taylor Orsburn, Jayna Spivey and Allie VadeBoncouer has combined to start 785 career games for an average of 157 starts per player.

Softball wins finale 3-1 over Indiana State
The Southern Illinois softball team (22-10, 9-3 MVC) earned the series win in a 3-1 victory over Indiana State on Strike Out Cancer Day.

Indiana State is fighting for an MVC tournament berth in the last weekend of the regular season. The Sycamores are currently in ninth place in the conference, just one spot away from a spot in the eight-team field. They sit one game behind eighth-place Missouri State and hold the tiebreaker over the Bears should the two teams tie for the eighth spot.

The Sycamores were picked last in the MVC in the preseason poll but have competed well--they took a game from league-leader Illinois State earlier this year--thanks to a potent offense and daunting running game. They rank second in the conference in team batting average and third in the conference in on-base percentage, thanks in large part to preseason All-Conference player Morgan Allee, who is hitting .390 this year with six home runs to lead the Sycamores. Kassie Brown (.352 avg) and Erika Chrissmann (.338 avg) have also been great for INS at the dish.

Indiana State has had a historic year at the plate, already breaking three school records and on pace to break five more by the end of the season. Once on base, Indiana State's runners have stolen 90 bases, which is 29 mores than anyone else in the league.

Indiana State's pitching has a 3.64 team ERA and is led by Yvette Alvarez, who has won 16 games behind a 3.50 ERA. Taylor Lockwood has a 3.53 ERA and an 8-13 record this year in 33 appearances.

A pair of SIU underclassmen earned weekly laurels from the conference after big weeks last week. Sophomore shortstop Kelsey Gonzalez earned MVC Player of the Week honors after hitting .400 last week and helping SIU to a series win over then-league leader Wichita State. Over the course of a five-game week, Gonzalez slugged .933 and had two home runs and six RBIs for SIU. She became SIU's second Player of the Week this year, joining Jayna Spivey. Shaye Harre, a freshman, earned MVC Newcomer of the Week honors after hitting .471 over the same week with a .706 slugging percentage and .500 on-base percentage with five RBIs. She recorded a five-game hitting streak over the last week.

The Salukis are heating up at the right time of the season. SIU played .500 softball for the first 40 games of the season, never going more than two games above or two games below the .500 mark. SIU only had one three-game winning streak and one three-game losing streak in that time, trading wins and losses throughout the first 40 games. Since falling to 17-19 after the first game at Bradley, Southern has won 10 of 12 games, which includes a seven-game MVC winning streak that bumped the squad's MVC record from 5-7 to 12-7 and moved the Salukis into third place in the MVC. Last weekend, SIU played then-league leader Wichita State, who came into the series at 17-4 in the MVC, and gave the Shockers their first MVC series loss of the season by sweeping Saturday's doubleheader.

Jayna Spivey has hit 17 doubles so far in 2014, which leads the MVC and ranks 19th nationally. With the mark, she passed teammate Taylor Orsburn's 15 she hit last season for the most in a single season in school history. Becky Lis had also hit 15 in a season during her 1997 campaign. Spivey actually has hit 18 doubles this season, but her walkoff double vs. Murray State is technically a single; the winning run traveled only one base, so Spivey only received credit for a single on the play. Nonetheless, Spivey's 17 doubles has led the Salukis to a No. 27 ranking nationally in doubles per game. With her big season, Spivey is catching up to Orsburn for career doubles. Orsburn ranks fifth in school history with 39 career doubles; Spivey is right behind her and sixth in school history with 38.

Taylor Orsburn has 28 RBIs this season, bringing her career total to 135, which ranks second in SIU history and ninth in MVC history. The only other hitter in Southern Illinois history who has more career RBIs than Orsburn is teammate Jayna Spivey, who broke SIU's career record earlier this season and ranks sixth in MVC history with 145 career RBIs.

With both Spivey and Orsburn in the top-10 in MVC history in career RBIs, Southern Illinois is the only school with teammates in the top-10. With four total players among the top-12 RBI producers in MVC history, Southern has the most players among the MVC's elite RBI producers of any school.

SIU senior Allie VadeBoncouer reached base in 28-straight games in which she has had an at-bat for the Salukis, the longest streak for any SIU player since at least 2003. Her streak started the Boston College game earlier this season and ended in the second game of last weekend's doubleheader with Wichita State--a game in which VadeBoncouer put down three perfect sacrifice bunts. With her walk against UT-Martin, VadeBoncouer passed teammate Taylor Orsburn for the longest such streak since at least 2003. Orsburn reached base in 26-straight games overlapping the 2013 and 2014 seasons, reaching base in the final 23 games of 2013 before reaching base in the first three games of this season.

VadeBoncouer hit just .217 during her remarkable 28-game reached base streak, but her on-base percentage was .500 during the swing. Her .479 season on-base percentage ranks fourth in the Valley, and she is seeking her second .500 season on-base percentage of her career after getting on base at a .505 clip in 2012.

SIU junior Katie Bertelsen has emerged as the staff ace. In her first seven appearances after MVC play started, Bertelsen had a 1.83 ERA and threw six complete games in her seven starts. She threw a complete-game shutout in the series opener against Drake and allowed more than two earned runs only twice. She went pitch-for-pitch with 2012 MVC Pitcher of the Year Jamie Fisher of UNI in a 10-inning 2-1 loss and backed it up by only allowing six earned runs over her next 24 innings (2.14 ERA). After a rough patch, Bertelsen appears to be back to her dominant ways. She went 4-0 in SIU's seven-game winning streak with a great 2.89 ERA. Most encouraging, she only allowed hitters a .230 average against her in that span, while her season batting average against is at .284. She struck out 10 batters in that streak, as well. She pitched arguably the best game of her career in the series opener against Wichita State. Facing a Shocker lineup that led the MVC in nine offensive categories, Bertelsen allowed just one earned run and limited a Wichita State team that entered the game with a .314 team batting average to 4-for-24 at the plate (.167 average).

Bertelsen has posted just a 3.29 ERA in MVC play and thrown 12 complete games. She's recorded the W in nine of SIU's 14 conference wins. Although she's SIU's starter, she's also recorded three saves this year. With 12 saves now in her career, Bertelsen ranks sixth in the NCAA in career saves among active players.

Kelsey Gonzalez has been Southern's hottest hitter over the past few weeks, raising her season batting average to .344, which is second on the team. Gonzalez is second on the team with 11 multi-hit games. She has hit safely in 23 of the last 32 games and reached base in 26 of those games, raising her batting average nearly 85 points from .262 to .344. In that 32-game stretch, Gonzalez has a team-best .384 batting average to go along with a .447 on-base percentage and .581 slugging percentage.

Gonzalez's turnaround is remarkable considering she hit just .210 as a freshman in 2013 while starting all 52 games. She hit just one home run as a freshman, too, but she is up to four this year. She hit a three-run blast that started SIU's 9-0, five-inning rout of UT-Martin and another shot to start SIU's 10-3 rout of Wichita State in the second game of last Saturday's doubleheader. She has nearly doubled her slugging percentage from her freshman year; after slugging .261 last year, she's up to .504 this year.

Sacrifice flies are rare in softball, with eight sac flies on the year leading the NCAA as of last Monday's stat report. Kelsey Gonzalez has been one of the nation's best at getting a run home from third. With six sac flies, Gonzalez tied one other player for fourth in the NCAA this year in sacrifice flies. If she's not hitting a sac fly, chances are she's still getting the runner home: Gonzalez is hitting .533 (8-for-15) this year with a runner on third and less than two outs.

SIU freshman Merri Anne Patterson was inserted into the starting lineup for the series at Bradley and wasted no time in making a spark. The Salukis have gone 10-3 since Patterson became a regular starter. She threw out the potential tying run at home in the bottom of the seventh to secure a 7-6 win over Bradley in the second game of the series; her two-run home run in the series finale proved to be the difference in a 6-4 win; and her solo home run in the fifth inning of game one at Wichita was the difference in SIU's 2-1 win. Patterson has hit .286 during her starting tenure, and she has a team-leading 12 RBIs since being inserted into the starting lineup. She has fit right in with SIU's ability to get on base, posting a .429 on-base percentage in those 13 games.

With one weekend left in the MVC regular season, Jayna Spivey is in the hunt for the MVC batting title in conference games. Spivey is hitting .465 through 23 MVC games and has a .587 on-base percentage and .746 slugging percentage to go along with 20 RBIs. Her .465 batting average ranks second in the conference only to Wichita State's Brittany Fortner, who is hitting an even .500 in MVC play. Spivey likely needs at least three more hits than Fortner this weekend to win the batting crown.

Spivey isn't the only SIU player leaving her mark in conference play. Shaye Harre has nearly hit .400 as a freshman. Her .371 batting average ranks ninth in the Valley. Kelsey Gonzalez is hitting .338 in 23 MVC games. Kelsea Ashton and Merri Anne Patterson have also been sparks in conference play. Ashton has hit just .128 in non-conference play, but she's hitting .313 in 23 MVC games and drawn eight walks to post a .441 on-base percentage. Patterson was inserted into the starting lineup halfway through the conference season but is hitting .286 with 10 RBIs, and she also has a .429 OBP.

SIU senior first baseman Taylor Orsburn, pitching for the first time in her SIU career, leads the MVC with a 2.40 ERA in 67 innings this year. She had a 1.95 ERA in her first 32.1 innings. In that span, she allowed hitters just a .242 average against her. To start MVC play, she was even better, posting an 1.21 ERA in her first 17.1 innings, which spanned five appearances. Hitters managed only a .215 average over that time. Orsburn had a 15-inning scoreless streak heading into the seventh inning of SIU's 9-3 win at SLU before giving up an earned run in the blowout. She is a perfect 5-0 in MVC play to go along with a 2.92 ERA in MVC-only games.

True freshman Shaye Harre has jumped right in and been one of the best hitters in the conference from the start of her career. Harre ranks 15th nationally among freshman in RBIs per game as of the last NCAA stat report last Monday and, along with Jayna Spivey, has led SIU to the No. 27 rank nationally out of 289 schools in doubles per game. Harre leads the team in home runs (4), RBIs (42) and triples (2), and she's done all that despite hitting just .194 with five RBIs in her first 13 games.

Harre's 42 RBIs are second among freshmen in SIU history, trailing only teammate Taylor Orsburn's 49 RBI season in 2011. She ranks second in the MVC in RBIs this year and ranks in the top-10 in the league on five offensive categories.

SIU senior Allie VadeBoncouer has been hit by 15 pitches this year. That marks 70 times in her career that VadeBoncouer has been hit by a pitch, second in NCAA history. VadeBoncouer passed Auburn's Myesha Finney (2006-09) for sole possession of second place on the NCAA's all-time HBP list by wearing one against Eastern Illinois on Wednesday. VadeBoncouer probably will have to settle for second on the list; the NCAA's career leader, Mariah Gearhart of Okahoma State (2008-11) blows away the field with an amazing 92 career HBPs.

Jayna Spivey and Taylor Orsburn have their names plastered all over the SIU record books. Both players are in the top-10 in school history in career at bats, doubles, home runs, and RBIs. Additionally, Orsburn ranks eighth in career hits, and Spivey ranks fourth in career runs scored, and the other player is knocking on the door of the top-10 in both of those categories.

In the single-season list, Taylor Orsburn's 2011 campaign is now second in doubles (15) after Spivey broke that record earlier this year. Orsburn's 49 RBIs in 2011 rank third in school history, while Spivey's 44 last year rank sixth. Spivey hit 11 home runs in both 2011 and 2013, ranking seventh in school history, and Orsburn hit 10 in 2011, which ranks 10th.

Southern led the MVC in drawing free bases last season with a combined 259 free bases via walks and hit-by-pitches. The Salukis ranked second behind Illinois State for the MVC's lead in bases on balls with 201, and the Salukis' 58 free bases on hit by pitches was the league leader by 19.

This year, the Salukis have continued the trend. Southern leads the conference in walks by 26 despite playing the third-fewest games of the 10 MVC teams, leads the league in on-base percentage and ranks third in hit-by-pitches. As a result, the Salukis are second in the conference in runs scored and rank in the top-three in the MVC in nearly every offensive category.

SIU's series finale at Missouri State marked her 800th career game, all of which have come at SIU. Blaylock also picked up her 500th career coaching win on March 21, 2013, with SIU's doubleheader sweep of Saint Louis. In her 15th season, she is the second SIU coach and the eighth MVC coach to reach the 500-win milestone. Her career .661 winning percentage is the highest among the MVC's 500-win coaches.

SIU senior Jayna Spivey broke the school record for career RBIs on a game-tying two-run double in the top of the seventh inning in the first game against Missouri State on Saturday. The record was shared by Jamie Schuttek (1994-97) and Alicia Garza (2007-10). Schuttek and Garza each reached 132 career RBIs, and Spivey now has 145 total, which is good for sixth in MVC history.

Jayna Spivey earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors for the second-straight year, the organization announced on Thursday. Spivey, who holds a 3.76 GPA in biological sciences, ranks 19th nationally in doubles and is in the top-10 in the Missouri Valley Conference in 10 offensive categories. Spivey is now eligible for Academic All-America recognition, which will be announced on May 22.

Senior second baseman Jayna Spivey was named a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award. Spivey was a 2013 Capital One Academic All-District selection and First-Team Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete who holds a 3.761 cumulative GPA in biological sciences. The Rosiclare, Ill. recorded 44 RBI's in 2013 to lead the Missouri Valley Conference, which ties as the sixth-best season in SIU history. She also led SIU with 12 multi-RBI games and ranked second in the MVC with 11 home runs, which is tied for seventh in school history. Thirty NCAA softball student-athletes who excel both on and off the field were selected as candidates for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award® in collegiate softball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.
