CARBONDALE, Ill.— The Southern Illinois softball team closes out the 2013 regular season Saturday and Sunday with a three-game series at Indiana State.

    SIU VS. INDIANA STATE
SIU leads its all-time series with Indiana State 69-16 and the Sycamores have only taken two games from the Salukis in the past 10 years. Entering the final weekend of conference play, the Salukis are aiming to move up into a top four seed and an automatic first-round bye in next week’s MVC Tournament while the Sycamores have already been mathematically eliminated from the tournament, but are playing to get out of last place in the league. The ISU offense is led by junior Shelby Wilson, who has a team-best .361 batting average and 34 RBI and is tied for the team’s lead with 53 hits. Junior Allee Morgan is tied for the team’s lead with 53 hits in addition to leading the team in runs scored (36) and she is second on the team in batting average (.335). Also for ISU, sophomore Megan Stone (.331 avg, 45 hits, 37 RBI) has been a solid offensive contributor. The Sycamore pitching staff features three players that have logged at least 23 appearances. Ashli Scott (5-8) leads the team in ERA (4.74) and strikeouts (66) while Halle Humphrey (6-16, 5.17 ERA) has logged the most innings at 124.2. Steph Fougerousse (5-9, 5.11 ERA) rounds out ISU’s main rotation.

    LAST TIME THEY MET
SIU took two of three from the Sycamores last season in Carbondale. ISU won the opener 4-2 before the Salukis bounced back to win the next two 5-0 and 3-1.

    LAST TIME OUT
SIU fell to Illinois 4-2 in eight innings Wednesday in the Salukis’ final non-conference game and final home game of the regular season. The two teams were tied 2-2 through regulation before Illinois struck for two unearned runs in the eighth inning to get by Southern.

    ORSBURN ON BASE
Junior Taylor Orsburn enters the weekend on a 12-game hit streak and a 21-game on-base streak. Both of those totals are career bests and they both ranks second on the team for the season behind senior Morgan Barchan, who had a 15-game hit streak and a 24-game on-base streak earlier this season. Orsburn has recorded a hit in 18 out of SIU’s last 19 games. She has moved up into a tie for second on the team with 48 hits for the season, and her batting average has elevated to .294.

    SPIVEY NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT
Junior Jayna Spivey was named to the Capital One Academic All-District First-Team, which was announced Thursday by CoSIDA. This is Spivey’s first Academic-All District honor. She is now on the ballot for Academic All-America, which will be announced later this month. A biological sciences Major, Spivey holds a cumulative 3.80 GPA.

    LANG RACKING UP STRIKEOUTS
Senior pitcher Brittney Lang had a career week last week with 28 strikeouts in four appearances for an average of seven per game. Prior to April 20, Lang’s career high in strikeouts was seven. She has eclipsed that mark three times in the past two weeks. She set a new career high with 13 strikeouts April 20 against Creighton before racking up eight last Tuesday against Evansville and nine Sunday against Bradley.

    SPIVEY BRINGS RUNS HOME
Junior Jayna Spivey’s team-leading 43 RBI not only ranks third in the MVC for the season, but also ranks seventh in SIU history for a single season. The Rosiclare, Ill., native also ranks second on the team with 48 hits and 37 runs scored.

    SPIVEY HITS HOME RUNS
Spivey is also working her way up the SIU record book for home runs. Her 11 home runs this season ranks second in the MVC and seventh in school history for a single season. She is up to 29 home runs for her career, which ranks fourth in SIU history.

    BARCHAN CROSSES HOME
Senior outfielder Morgan Barchan’s 42 runs scored ranks fourth in the MVC and put her sixth in SIU history for runs scored in a season. The Arcadia, Calif., native has scored 116 runs over her career, which put her seventh in SIU history.

    BARCHAN ON THE HIT LIST
Barchan enters the week as the MVC’s leader with 61 hits on the season. That total puts Barchan in a tie for seventh in SIU history for hits in a single season. She sits 12 hits shy of Jen Feldmeier’s record of 73 from 1997.

    ISN’T IT GRAND?
Michelle Bradley’s first-inning grand slam last Tuesday against Evansville marked SIU’s sixth of the season, which set a new program record for grand slams in a season. SIU’s previous record of five grand slams came in 2010. Meredith Wilson has two of SIU’s grand slams this season while Bradley, Jayna Spivey, Taylor Orsburn and Allie VadeBoncouer have the others.

    SWINGING FOR THE FENCES
SIU is up to 36 homers for the season, which ranks fourth in the MVC. SIU’s 22 home runs in MVC games ranks second in the league. Six Saluki players (Michelle Bradley, Morgan Barchan, Kalyn Harker, Taylor Orsburn, Jayna Spivey and Meredith Wilson) have either equaled or bettered their home run totals from last season.

    BASES FOR FREE
Southern leads MVC in drawing free bases with a combined 259 free bases via walks and hit-by-pitches. The Salukis rank second behind Illinois State for the MVC’s lead in bases on balls with 201, and the Salukis’ 58 free bases on hit by pitches is the league leader by 19.

    VADEBONCOUER THE BALL MAGNET
Junior catcher Allie VadeBoncouer has drawn 22 free bases on hit-by-pitches this season. She is tied for sixth in the nation in HBPs through the NCAA’s most recent stats report. VadeBoncouer led the nation last season with 28 hit-by-pitches. She has been hit by 54 total pitches in her career.
