Schmidt earns State Farm MVC Good Neighbor Award

ST. LOUIS - Senior outfielder Katie Schmidt was selected as one of ten members of the spring Missouri Valley Conference State Farm Good Neighbor Award. Schmidt displayed leadership in the classroom and on the field to earn the spring honor given out by Commissioner Doug Elgin. Schmidt was a first team MVC Scholar-Athlete recipient and earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V Second Team with a 3.97 grade point average in marketing. In addition to her outstanding academic achievements, the Millstadt, Ill. native had a prolific season on the field. At the plate she set a new season career-high with her 24th hit against Creighton, had a game-winning walk-off solo home run to beat Missouri State and had a career-long six-game hit streak from March 4-8. On the bases she moved into seventh all-time at SIU for career steals with 44 and recorded double-digit steals in all four seasons. She also recorded a single-game high with two steals against No. 10 Missouri. In order to be eligible for the award, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing, must demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service, and must participate in a sport, during the season of recognition. The Valley recognizes 10 student-athletes three times annually (fall, winter, spring), for a total of 30 honorees. This year's spring honorees included Adam Kimble, Bradley; Michael Elson, Creighton; Chelsea Smith, Drake; Lissa Fehlman, Evansville; Mike Stalowy, Illinois State; Breanne Smith, Indiana State; Jen Carr, Missouri State; Kelly Papesh, UNI; Katie Schmidt, Southern Illinois; and Torrie Browning, Wichita State.
