CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois softball Head Coach Kerri Blaylock announces the signing of Natalee Weissinger and Alex Peters for the 2010 season.

Weissinger will be a junior transfer from the University of Tennessee and Peters, a junior college transfer from Crowder Community College.

Weissinger, a Madison, Tenn. native, played high school and summer ball with former Saluki Jayme Wamsley. In two seasons at Tennessee, she saw action in 80 games used primarily as a reserve or pinch runner.

In high school, Weissinger was a 2006 EA SPORTS All-American and The Tennessean's Player of the Year. She was a part of three-consecutive Tennessee (Class A) state, region and district title teams and the 2006 state, regional, and district champions at the high AA Division, leading her team to an overall record of 169-20-1 during her four seasons.

"We recruited Natalee out of high school and are happy that she decided to transfer to SIU," Blaylock said. "She has great hands on the infield and can hit the ball in the gap and with power. Her experience at Tennessee that last few years will definitely help us here at Southern. She has played in the SEC and has been to the World Series and that experience is invaluable."

Peters, an Adair, Okla. native, was named first team All-Region going 20-9 in 36 appearances with a 1.09 earned run average. She tallied 254 strike outs and gave up just 27 walks in 193.1 innings in 2009. As a freshman, she was 32-5 with a 1.39 ERA, posting 342 strike outs and just 24 walks in 227.0 innings.

Peters is expected to come in and take over for Nikki Waters.

"We are so excited to have found Alex," Blaylock said. "She had a great JUCO career and we feel that she can be successful at SIU. She is a strikeout type pitcher with good movement."
