NORMAL, Ill. - The Southern Illinois softball team went 1-1 on Sunday to take second place in the silver bracket at the State Farm Illinois Collegiate Softball Championship at Champion Fields in Normal, Ill.
SIU opened the second day of the inaugural tournament, which featured 11 of the 12 NCAA Division I softball teams in Illinois, with a 12-3 victory against Bradley. The win propelled the Salukis into the 3 p.m. silver bracket championship game against Eastern Illinois from the Ohio Valley Conference.
Eastern Illinois advanced after former Heartland Community College All-American Amber May threw a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts in a 4-0 win against Illinois State.
Southern Illinois jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first versus Eastern Illinois on a two-run double by senior third baseman Katie Wagner, that scored freshman Haley Gorman and Mallory Duran.
SIU extended it's lead to 3-0 on a solo home run by junior Allie Hanson in the top of the fifth, but the Panthers responded with three runs to send the game into extra-innings.
The game went into the bottom of the ninth tied at three, until EIU scored on a sacrifice-fly with runners on second and third to seal the come-from-behind win, 4-3.
The Salukis finished the exhibition tournament 2-2, and will take their 3-3 overall fall record into next Friday's (Sept. 26) home doubleheader against Southeast Missouri State beginning at 5:15 p.m. at Charlotte West Stadium.
The doubleheader will be a make up after the Saluki Invitational was cancelled due to inclement weather last Sunday.
