CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's tennis team fought back after being down 2-0 in singles play to win their home match against Eastern Illinois 4-3.

Maria Blanco and Zuzana Palovic both lost tough singles matches at the one and two spots respectively, but the Salukis rallied back to win the next three singles matches.

At the number three position Zoya Honarmand easily won in two sets 6-1, 6-0.

Amanda Taillefer enjoyed a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jill Wirtz at the four spot to even the singles wins at two a piece.

Laura Bredniak gave SIU a short-lived lead as she defeated Sam Lininger 6-3, 6-1 in the five position, but Kathleen Maher fell in the number six spot losing 6-0, 6-4.

"I am really pleased with the way the team battled back after being down 2-0 in singles," said tennis coach Rene Vidal. "It took a team effort to fight through that challenge."

The match was tied 3-3 heading into doubles play. Blanco and Palovic won the number one game 8-4. In the number two doubles match Sandra Sasidharan and Stephanie Harmazy edged out Taillefer and Honarmand 8-6.

Bredniak and Maher took the number three doubles match 8-1, earning the doubles point for the Salukis.

"Heading into doubles," said Vidal. "We felt confident in our ability to win."

"It was a matter of managing the pressure well and Laura Bredniak and Kathleen Maher did an excellent job of that to clinch the match for the team."

The win moved the Salukis to 3-5 on the season. Next up for the Salukis is Evansville, April 1, at home.
