    EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The Southern Illinois women's tennis opened up Missouri Valley Conference play this afternoon at Evansville, defeating the Aces, 6-1.

    SIU (11-3, 1-0 MVC) took the doubles point from Evansville (6-7, 0-1 MVC) after taking 2-of-3 doubles matches. Jennifer Dien and Natasha Tomishima won 8-3 at flight No. 2 to pick up their eighth doubles win of the spring season. Juniors Korey Love and Anita Lee defeated Gaby Fifer and Emily Richardson 8-3 at No. 3 for their ninth straight win of the year.

    In singles action SIU took 5-of-6 matches. Senior Melanie Delsart won at flight No. 1 (6-4, 6-1), while Lee bested Mina Milovic (6-4, 7-5) at No. 4. Ariadna Cairo Baza won (6-2, 6-1) and Anastacia Simons won (6-2, 6-2) at flight No. 6.

    "We played really solid as a team today," said head coach Audra Nothwehr. "It feels good to break through and get our first conference win."

    SIU will be back in action this weekend when they play host to Illinois State on Saturday at 1 p.m. for Fan Appreciation Day. The Salukis will be giving away t-shirts and free pizza. On Sunday Southern will welcome Bradley to town for a 10 a.m. match.
