    WICHITA, Kan. - The Southern Illinois University women's tennis team fell to Wichita State today, 6-1. The No. 72 ranked Shockers (9-6, 2-0 MVC) swept in doubles, and took five of the six singles matches for the win against the Salukis (8-8, 2-1 MVC).

    In doubles, Sabine Tsala Mvilongo and Jessica Flannery teamed up at the top seed against Stephanie Dalmacio and Laryssa Ferreira, falling 8-2. Martina Vianna Ce' and Michela Cruise were unable to hold off Anna Egorova ad Lenore Lazaroiu at No. 2 doubles, dropping their match 8-1. Amanda Taillefer and Andrea Courtney paired up against Florentina Hanisch and Torrie Browning at No. 3 doubles, but fell 8-1.

    The Shockers had the 1-0 advantage heading into singles, were Tsala met Wichita State's Dalmacio, who is ranked No. 4 in the Central Region. Tsala grabbed a huge win for the Salukis in a 6-3, 6-3 victory. Ce' dropped her match at No. 2 singles to Hanisch, 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore Michela Cruise was unable to hold off Egorova at No. 3 singles, falling 6-0, 6-0. Flannery fought for the win at No. 4 singles against Lazaroiu, but the match resulted in a close 6-4, 6-4 win for Lazaroiu. At No. 5 singles, Taillefer fought for the tiebreaker in the first set, but the win went in favor of Browning. Taillefer battled in the second set, but fell to Browning, 6-1. Agata Skorupska rounded out singles at No. 6, dropping her match to Ferreira, 6-1, 6-2.

     

     

    "We need to be more aggressive on doubles," said head coach Audra Nothwehr. "But I was proud of how we got close and stayed competitive. Hopefully next time we can take it to the next step."

    The Salukis return to action this weekend with three home matches where they will host Saint Louis, Northern Iowa, and Drake.
