OMAHA, Neb. - The Saluki women's tennis team closed out the regular season Sunday morning in Omaha, Neb., as they recorded a resounding 6-1 win over the Creighton Bluejays.
Southern Illinois concludes the regular season with a 14-8 mark overall and a 5-2 record in the Missouri Valley Conference, good for third place in the league.
"Overall, we played really well in all of our matches today," said Saluki head coach Audra Nothwehr. "Melanie played very well in her match and Michela was great in that third set. The girls knew what we had to do in this match and we came through. It is really important to get that third seed in the tournament. I think it sets us up very nicely to get to the conference championship, which is our goal."
Melanie Delsart recovered from yesterday's loss with a dominating win against Tess Reddin 6-1, 6-1 in top singles. The win was her 13th of the season - a team high in singles. Meanwhile, the freshman teamed up with Martina Vianna Ce in top doubles to defeat Anna Kirshenbaum and Reddin, 8-5.
The three Saluki seniors - Vianna Ce, Michela Cruise, and Jessica Flannery - all notched wins in singles. Vianna Ce topped Lindsey Erikson 6-4, 6-1, Cruise beat Mary Pat McMullen 3-6, 6-2, 7-5, and Flannery bested Sarah Cadwallader 6-0, 6-1.
In addition, Emily Whitney snapped her three match singles skid with a 6-3, 7-6 triumph over Lauren Mastro.
In doubles, Jennifer Dien and Flannery teamed up to take down Sarah Cadwallader and Leesa Cadwallader, 8-1.
