CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois women's tennis team wrapped up its regular season with a 7-0 loss to Wichita State earlier today at University Courts.
In a Missouri Valley Conference regular season championship match the Shockers (12-10, 7-0 MVC) handled the Saluki home crowd with ease, winning at every position.
"We needed to be a bit more consistent in our games," said head coach Audra Nothwehr. "I think we just came out a little nervous today."
The Salukis (17-4, 6-1 MVC) battled but could not pick up a win in doubles play. Natasha Tomishima and Jennifer Dien fell in a tiebreaker to their WSU counterparts 8-7 (1) while Korey Love and Anita Lee fell 8-6 at the No. 3 spot.
"I have seen our doubles teams down by as many as six points and come back," said Nothwehr. "Today we battled hard but we just came up short in the end."
In singles action the Shockers took all six matches. Senior Melanie Delsart was bested at flight No. 1 (6-2, 6-2) and Tomishima was defeated by Julia Schiller (7-6(4), 6-1) at No. 2.
Dein fell (6-2, 6-2) and Anastacia Simons lost (6-0, 6-0) at the No. 6 spot.
The Salukis will travel to Wichita, Kans. for the MVC Championships this weekend. Southern will go into the tournament as the No. 2 seed behind Wichita State. Final seeding will be released later in the week.
