OMAHA, Neb.-The Southern Illinois women's tennis team wasted no time jumping on the Aces in the 2012 State Farm MVC Tournament, winning, 4-0.
The Salukis (17-5, 5-2 MVC) took the doubles point from Evansville (13-10, 3-4 MVC) winning at the No. 2 and 3 spots. Natasha Tomishima and Jennifer Dien defeated Kelsey Costales and Emily Richardson, 9-7 at No. 2. Anita Lee and Anastacia Simons won at the No. 3 slot, 8-5, against the Evansville duo of Aleks Dzakula and Jessica Raatz.
"We played really well today, with a lot of passion," said head coach Audra Nothwher. "If we play like this tomorrow, we are going to give Wichita quite a challenge."
Southern completed only three singles matches to wrap-up the tournament win. Junior Melanie Delsart bested Dora Kotsiou, 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot. Dien scored a three-set win at the No. 2 spot, defeating Dzakula 7-5, 2-6, 6-4. Tomishima clinched the quarterfinal win for the Dawgs, coming back to win her match 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Today's match marks the second year in a row that Southern has defeated the Aces in the opening round of the MVC Tournament.
The Salukis will be back in action tomorrow when they face the No. 58 ranked Shockers in Omaha. Wichita State defeated Bradley, 4-0 today in their tournament opener. First serve is slated for 9 a.m.
