St. Louis, Mo. - The Southern Illinois women's tennis team wrapped up the 2013 MVC Individual Championships held at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis Sunday, winning both the No. 1 doubles championship and the No. 2 singles championship.
Senior Korey Love and junior Natasha Tomishima won the flight No. 1 doubles championship after defeating Montse B. Fernandez and Rebecca Pedrazzi of Wichita State, 8-5. The duo defeated teams from Drake and Illinois State on their way to the finals.
"They played big when we needed them to and won some big matches," said head coach Audra Anderson. "For them it was about playing the crucial points well."
Anita Lee defeated Astrid Santos of Northern Iowa 6-0, 6-4 to advance to the finals where she bested Arial Dechter of Bradley 7-5, 6-4, to take the flight No. 2 singles championship.
"Anita did a great job and was always in control of her matches," said Anderson. "She was able to keep calm and play big when she needed to."
Freshman Meagan Monaghan defeated Ashley Thai (BU) 7-6 (4-0), 6-0 to take fifth place in flight No. 3 singles.
Ariadna Cairo Baza fell in the championship of flight No. 4 singles to Montse B. Fernandez 6-1, 7-6 (4-0), Gisela Cairo Baza fell in the third place match of flight No. 5 to S. Mahajaroenkul 6-4, 6-1 and Tomishima fell in the third place match of flight No. 1 singles to Natasha James of Evansville 6-3, 0-6, 10-5.
"We've had a great tradition of winning championships and we hope to keep that up."
The Salukis will be back in action Oct. 17, when they travel to Norman Okla. for the ITA Regional Championships.
