JONESBORO, Ark. - The Southern Illinois women's tennis team concluded its fall season Saturday at the Red Wolf Invitational hosted by Arkansas State on Saturday.
The Salukis traveled with just three players, each picking up wins during the two-day tournament. Freshmen Lauren Hoekstra and Polina Dozortseva both brought back consolation titles from their flights as well as Ariadna Cairo Baza pairing up with a Murray State player for the Flight No. 4 doubles championship.
Dozortseva defeated Nikki Maciel (6-7, 7-6, 7-6) before knocking off Abbey Mather in the Flight No. 3 consolation finals, 6-2, 6-0. Hoekstra defeated two Belmont players to win the Flight No. 4 consolation. She beat Jenna Kraku 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals before besting Anne Fiepke in the final, 6-4, 6-1.
Hoekstra and Dozortseva paired up in flight No. 3 doubles, falling to a SEMO duo 8-7 and defeating Maciel and Sandra Kancheva of Belmont, 8-5. Due to an odd number of players, Cairo Baza paired up with Suzaan Stoltz of Murray State, advancing all the way to the finals of Flight No. 4 doubles and defeating a Murray State duo, 8-7.
"Since we only brought three players, they had to play in tougher flights then they were used to," said head coach Audra Anderson. "Overall, I thought we did pretty well, and now we have an idea of what we have to work on in the offseason."
