CARBONDALE, Ill.- For just the second time in school history, a doubles pair has entered the ITA national doubles rankings, while Melanie Delsart earns an ITA regional ranking for the second straight year.
Delsart and Anastacia Simons, both seniors earned a doubles ranking of No. 36 nationally and No. 5 in the ITA Central Region, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings released Thursday.
The duo has a record of 11-1 on the season with their most recent victory coming against Arkansas State's Ioana Teu and Janie Nowland, 8-4 on Nov. 4.
Their lone loss this season came to the No. 34 ranked duo of Petra Niedermayerova and Karla Bonacic of Kansas State in the semifinals of the ITA Regional tournament.
"Anastacia and Melanie have both stepped their game up and have worked hard over the summer," said head coach Audra Nothwehr. "Having not played together before this year, they have really surprised me how well they are in sync with each other because with most teams it takes much longer."
This is the first time since 2009 a doubles duo has been nationally recognized, when Vishakha Sheoran and Martina Vianna Ce were ranked No. 68 by the ITA.
The ITA has also ranked Delsart at No. 19 in singles competition for the central region after a 7-3 start to her 2012-13 campaign. Delsart finished 22-8 last season, playing all of her matches at the No. 1 spot.
The Salukis will kick off the spring season at Lindsey Wilson on Jan. 25.
