St. Louis, Mo.-Last week, Missouri Valley Conference men's and women's tennis teams compiled a 16-15 record in various non-conference duals, including four matches against ranked opponents. The MVC women's teams were a combined 10-5 last week, while the men's squads totaled a 6-10 record overall.
Creighton enjoyed Spring Break matches in Orlando, Fla., with the Bluejay women compiling an impressive 6-0 record and the men's team notching three wins in four matches last week.
Just one match is on tap in Valley league action, as Creighton's women's team will host Bradley in Omaha, Neb (Mar. 21).
This week, Drake's men's team will take on two ranked opponents in No. 71 UNC-Wilmington and No.72 South Carolina-Upstate.
In the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings (Mar. 17), the Wichita State women moved up three spots to No. 66.
This week's State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tennis Athletes of the Week are Illinois State's Filip Miljevic and Fadzai Mawisire of Southern Illinois.
State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week: Filip Miljevic, So., Illinois State, Novi Sad, Serbia (Sportska Gimnazija) Sophomore Filip Miljevic was a perfect 2-0 in singles competition last week against Louisiana-Lafayette and Southeastern Louisiana.
At Louisiana-Lafayette, Miljevic topped Piotr Olechowski, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 3 singles position, to grab the sole team-point for the Redbirds.
Miljevic stepped up again for the Redbirds against Southeastern Louisiana, after a teammate suffered an injury early in singles competition. Miljevic defeated Damien Cordoba in a super tie-breaker, 4-6, 7-6, 10-8, at the No. 3 slot to clinch his match.
Others nominated include: Gabe Nagy of Creighton and Ricardo Lau of Drake.
State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week:
Fadzai Mawisire, Sr., Southern Illinois, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe (Clapham)
Senior Fadzai Mawisire remained perfect in her singles career at Southern Illinois with three wins at the No. 1 position last week as the Salukis spent spring break playing opponents in Boca Raton, Fla.
Mawisire's current record at No. 1 singles at SIU now stands at 8-0. The Salukis went 2-1 overall last week defeating Florida Atlantic and James Madison.
Others nominated include: Tess Reddin of Creighton, Hannah Esker of Illinois State, Anna Morgina of Indiana State and Lutfiana Budiharto of Wichita State.
