WICHITA, Kan.-- Southern Illinois women’s tennis head coach Audra Nothwehr was named Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year at the tennis awards banquet Thursday evening in Wichita, Kan., preceding the Valley Team Tennis Championship hosted by Wichita State University.

SIU’s men’s and women’s programs also combined for a total of 13 awards including two All-Conference selections and three First Team Scholar-Athlete selections.

Saluki women’s head coach Audra Nothwehr highlighted the evening for Southern Illinois. Nothwehr, in her sixth season at the helm, was named MVC Coach of the Year after leading the Saluki women to a regular season record of 17-4 and 6-1 in the Valley. This marks the first time a Saluki coach has received the honor since 1988 when Judy Auld was named coach of the year.

On the men’s side, Jonny Rigby was named a 2013 MVC All-Conference selection for his achievement in singles and doubles play. In his freshman season Rigby recorded a perfect 5-0 ledger in conference play and an impressive 14-3 overall record on the season at the No. 4 singles position.

Rigby also earned All-Conference doubles honors with partner Badr Cherradi. The duo posted a 4-1 conference record in the No. 2 spot and combined for an overall record of 10-8. Senior Brandon Florez was named to the MVC All-Select team for the first time in his career.

The Saluki men also had two selections to the Valley’s Scholar-Athlete teams. Rafael Cuadrillero earned a spot on the First Team, posting a 3.795 GPA in civil engineering, while senior Badr Cherradi was given an honorable mention. Cherradi holds a 3.268 GPA in business economics.

The Saluki women collected eight awards overall at the banquet, in addition to Audra Nothwehr being named the MVC Coach of the Year.

Senior Melanie Delsart and sophomore Natasha Tomishima were named to the MVC All-Select team. Delsart has garnered All-Select honors every year of her SIU career. Tomishima received her first MVC All-Select honor of her career.

Five Saluki women were named MVC Scholar-Athletes after achieving excellence on and off the court, including Anita Lee, Anastacia Simons, Korey Love, Delsart and Tomishima.

Three players earned First-Team Scholar-Athlete awards, including Delsart, who has won the award for her fourth consecutive year, while Simons and Lee earned First-Team awards for the second-straight year.

Love and Tomishima were named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete Honorable Mention team.

The Southern Illinois tennis teams will be in action today as the No. 2 women take on No. 7 Creighton at 12:30 p.m. while the No. 3 Saluki men square off with No. 6 Creighton at 4 p.m.
