Evansville, Ind. - The SIU women's tennis team dominated play on day one at the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships in Evansville, Ind., as they won all six of their singles matches and one of their two doubles matches.
In singles, Emily Whitney started the day on a positive note in Flight #1 by defeating Bradley's Nicole Miller in straight sets 7-6, 6-3.
Meanwhile, Vishakha Sheoran continued her winning ways, as she handily defeated Theadora Kotsiou of Evansville in Flight #2 6-3, 6-2. The win is her fifth straight in the fall season.
In Flight #3, freshman Jennifer Dien recovered from a rough weekend in Chattanooga last week, as she managed to top Ashton Schwerin of Evansville 6-4, 6-4.
Of all the singles matches, Jessica Flannery clearly showed the most composure. After losing the first set to Evansville's Aleksandra Dzakula, the senior came from behind to win the second set in tie-breakers, then narrowly won the third and final set to take down Dzakula 2-6, 7-6(6), 6-4, to advance in Flight #4.
In the final singles match for SIU, Michela Cruise advanced with a incredible win by only losing one game en route to a straight sets win over Bradley's Brigitte Graf 6-0, 6-1, in Flight #5.
In doubles, Martina Vianna Ce and Sheoran hung tough in their opening match in Doubles Flight #1, but were defeated by Phoebe Walker and Laia Gonzalez-Garrido of Northern Iowa, 8-5. However, Dien and Flannery teamed up in Flight #2 to take down Creighton's Leesa Cadwallader and Kelsey Schmidt, 8-5.
