CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois' volleyball team was swept by Arkansas State, 3-0 (30-25, 30-20, 30-24), in its final game of the 26th Saluki Invitational Saturday afternoon. The loss placed the Salukis third in the three-team tournament and dropped SIU to 1-4 on the season.
The Indians had two players with double-digit kills, including a double-double (19 kills, 10 digs) from all-tournament team member Pip Soulsby. Robin Aaron, the tournament MVP, added 14 kills in the Indians' win
Johannah Yutzy and Katy DeWulf led the Salukis with nine kills and a career-high five block assists each. Kristy Elswick had 19 digs, while setters Monica Laird and Holly Marita recorded 15 assists apiece. Marissa Washington had eight kills and four block assists.
The Indians out-hit Southern 53 kills to 36, hitting .287 in the match.
Marissa Washington was named to the Saluki Invitational All-Tournament team for the second-straight year after leading the Salukis in kills (21), averaging 2.62 per game, hitting percentage (.395) and blocks (8).
Jene' Pulliam and Katy DeWulf posted 20 kills apiece in the tournament, while Johannah Yutzy added 17. Holly Marita recorded 58 assists and Kristy Elswick led the Salukis with 38 digs and three service aces. DeWulf and Yutzy also added eight blocks each, including one solo.
The Salukis open the Missouri Valley Conference season on Tuesday when they host Evansville at 7 p.m. in Davies Gym. The Aces are 3-5 heading into the conference season.
