NORMAL, Ill.--The Southern Illinois volleyball team struggled at Illinois State Sunday afternoon falling to the Redbirds in straight sets, 21-25, 19-25, 19-25.

"We played inconsistent today at each position and were unable to string successes in a row," said SIU head coach Justin Ingram.

The Salukis (6-8, 1-1 MVC) were able to keep pace with Illinois State (9-3, 2-0 MV) in the first set before the Redbirds used a 3-0 run to lead SIU 15-10. Meg Viggars knocked in a kill to stop the Redbird run but ISU responded going on a 5-0 run to take a 20-11 lead. Southern Illinois battled back to come within one point taking the match to 22-21 and forcing ISU to take a timeout. The Redbirds rebounded scoring the last three points to win the set.

Illinois State kept the late-set momentum rolling into set two, jumping out to an early 6-1 lead. The Salukis, again, showed resiliency coming within two at 10-8. The two teams exchanged points, but a 4-0 run by ISU gave the Redbirds a 16-10 advantage. The Salukis got back within five at 20-15 but the Illinois State defense was able to block SIU's offensive efforts at the net ending the set.

The two teams went back and forth in the third set taking the match to a tie at 18-18. The Redbirds went on a 5-0 run to lead the Salukis 23-18. An Illinois State error stopped the run but ISU got right back on track scoring the final two points of the set to complete the sweep.

Taylor Pippen led the Salukis in hitting efficiency posting a clip of .316. Jessica Whitehead recorded 15 kills.

"This weeks practices will be important as we look to host Bradley and Loyola next weekend," Ingram said.

Southern Illinois returns to Carbondale to host Bradley Friday, Sep. 27 at 7 p.m. and will welcome Loyola on Saturday at 3 p.m.
