CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois University volleyball team won its eighth straight home match Saturday afternoon against Drake in four sets 25-20, 22-25, 25-23, 25-12.
The Salukis have not won eight in a row at home since the 1994 season.
"Our expectations are always high and we expect to win," said SIU head coach Justin Ingram. "This team is physical and Southern Illinois is capable of producing on any day."
The senior tandem of Alyisa Mayes and Laura Thole led the Saluki offense Saturday each recording 18 kills. Freshman Taylor Pippen had another successful day tallying eight kills for a hitting efficiency of .438.
Bailey Yeager controlled the backcourt for Southern Illinois posting 23 digs. Yeager now totals 1099 career digs to rank fifth all-time in SIU history.
Drake (1-14, 0-5 MVC) held the advantage early in the first set leading SIU (13-3, 4-2 MVC) by four points. Freshman Mary Bogdanski served six straight points with help off kills from Jessica Whitehead and Laura Thole. Drake faulted twice at the net allowing Southern to start breaking away. The Salukis played off the Bulldogs to win the set 25-20.
The Bulldogs would not go away quietly, making a statement in the second set. Drake went on a spree, scoring six consecutive points to lead the Salukis 10-6. The teams traded points until SIU took a 22-19 lead. Drake controlled the end of the set scoring six more points off the serve of Sarah Madden to win set two 25-22.
Southern still had trouble distancing itself from Drake again in the third down, 22-19. The Salukis were able to muster a comeback keyed by Laura Thole and Amy Drabant. Alysia Mayes put away the last kill to seal the set 25-23.
SIU ran away with the fourth set out hitting Drake .560 to .143. The Salukis went on several multiple point runs to distance themselves from their opponent. DU could not catch up, trailing Southern the entire set. The Salukis took the final set 25-12 to record their eighth straight win at home.
The Salukis take a break from MVC play to travel to Murray State on Tuesday taking on the Racers at 7 p.m.
