CARBONDALE, Ill.-- The Southern Illinois volleyball team opened the weekend with a 3-0 loss to Wichita State Friday night in Wichita, Kan.

The Shockers (14-3, 4-0 MVC) showed why they were unanimous pick to lead the MVC this season, defeating the Salukis 25-23, 25-19, 25-21.

Despite the loss, Southern Illinois (7-10, 2-3 MVC) held its own against WSU in the opening set tying the score eight times. Wichita State jumped out with an early 8-2 lead but the Salukis caught the heels of the home team finding their first tie at 12 apiece. The score flip flopped until a tie at 22 when SIU committed two errors to allow the Shockers to lock down the set at 25-23.

The second set followed suit with Southern Illinois and Wichita State knotting the score late in the set. The veteran Shocker team was able to hold off SIU finishing the set with three, 3-0 runs.

Wichita State controlled the third set never allowing Southern to take a lead. The Salukis were able to record 14 kills in the final stanza but it wasn't enough to force a fourth set with the 2012 Sweet Sixteen team.

Jessica Whitehead tallied 11 kills while Elly Braaten chipped in seven. Hannah Kaminsky dished out 24 assists while Alex Rivera recorded a team-high 12 digs.

The Salukis will travel to Missouri State on Saturay for a 7 p.m. match with the Bears.
