    CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois volleyball team took a break from conference play to host South Dakota tonight, sweeping the Coyotes (25-19, 25-13, 25-15).

    The Salukis came out strong in the first set with a 25-19 victory over the Coyotes. Sophomore Jasmine Conner led the team in blocks, posting four block assists. As a team the Salukis recorded six blocks against South Dakota in the first set alone. Chandra Roberson led the team in hitting with .667, while Jennifer Berwanger went 4 for 11, hitting .273.

    SIU carried that momentum into the second set, dominating the Coyotes 25-13. The Salukis recorded three more blocks for a total of nine coming out of the second set. Heading into the third set, the Salukis were hitting .282, holding South Dakota to .048.

    Southern gained a 12-3 lead early in the third set and went on to defeat the Coyotes 25-15 for the sweep. Erika Bartruff's match-winning kill gave the Salukis their second sweep in a row after last night's match against Evansville. Southern Illinois hit .288 and held South Dakota to .072.

    The Saluki defense was key tonight, recording 73 digs and ten blocks. Brooklyn Robbins posted her 25th career double-double with 32 assists and 13 digs, while J. Berwanger grabbed her 19th double-double with 10 kills and 22 digs. Roberson led the team hitting, as she went 10 for 19 with a .474 hitting percentage.

    "We played with a lot of heart," said head coach Brenda Winkeler. "We played defense very hard, our offense was on and we had a lot of people hitting. Nobody had a bad night either night."

     

     

    The Salukis will be back in action next weekend as they host Northern Iowa Friday, Oct. 31 and Bradley on Saturday, Nov. 1.
