    CHICAGO, Ill.—The Southern Illinois University volleyball team defeated Loyola Friday night, topping the Ramblers 25-20, 25-18, 20-25, 25-20 to record their fifth consecutive win.

    The Salukis (12-10, 7-3 MVC) defense was on-point with 11 total blocks as they held Loyola (8-14, 3-7 MVC) to a .161 hitting percentage.

    Senior Jessica Whitehead continued to shine recording a team-high 17 kills and posting an impressive .343 hitting percentage. Fellow senior Elly Braaten also knocked in double-digit kills, adding 14.

    Southern Illinois was hot out of the gate recording 17 kills with only four errors for a match-high hitting efficiency of .363. Loyola was able to take a 12-9 lead when SIU began to battle back, tying the set at 15. The Salukis were able to score points in bunches to create a comfortable lead to take the set 25-20.

    The second set saw the score tie 11 times with five lead changes as the teams passed points back and forth. The latest tie of the set came at 18 when Southern was able to score seven consecutive points off the serve of reining Freshman of the Week, Hannah Kaminsky, to win the second set 25-18 and lead Loyola 2-0.

    Southern Illinois found itself with a nine-point deficit mid-way through the third set but showed resiliency to close the gap and come within two points. Two Saluki service errors halted the comeback and Loyola recorded its only set win of the night, 25-20.

    Loyola put up a fight in the opening of fourth set but was unable to sustain the momentum. Southern pulled away from LU after a mid-set tie and never looked back winning the set and match.

    The Salukis will travel to Peoria, Ill. Saturday for a 7 p.m. match with the Bradley Braves.
