DES MOINES, Iowa— The Southern Illinois volleyball team swept Drake Saturday night to take the season series against the Bulldogs. SIU won by scores of 25-12, 25-19 and 25-21.

Jessica Whitehead led the Salukis offensively tallying 12 kills. Fellow senior Elly Braaten recorded 11 kills on 19 swings for a season-high hitting efficiency of .474. Freshman Hannah Kaminsky dished out 38 assists.

The Salukis (15-12, 10-5 MVC) raced out to a 14-8 lead in the first set and never looked back. The Bulldogs (2-23, 0-13 MVC) struggled to slow down the Saluki system, never taking a lead during the first set. Southern went on a 5-0 run off the serve of Alex Rivera to distance themselves from Drake. SIU convincingly took the first set 25-12.

The second set of the night was a carbon copy of the first as Southern controlled the majority of the set. Drake was able to take a 3-0 lead before SIU took over, not allowing the Bulldogs an advantage for the remainder of the set. The Salukis saw their best set offensively in the second recording a .400 hitting clip.

Drake battled Southern halfway through the third set coming within one point at 18-17. Southern responded quickly with a 6-0 run to take a 24-17 lead. The Bulldogs didn’t give up answering with a 4-0 run to threaten the Saluki lead. Senior Jessica Whitehead took control, punching in a kill to put away the set and match for Southern.

Southern Illinois returns to Carbondale on Friday, Nov. 15 to host the Purple Aces of Evansville.
