    CARBONDALE, Ill.-- The Southern Illinois University volleyball team battled Illinois State Friday night in a five-set contest but came up short falling to the Redbirds 19-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-19, and 13-15.

    Bailey Yeager had a banner night tallying 32 digs to break the SIU all-time single season digs record previously held by Kristy Elswick. This season Yeager has complied 593 digs. The senior now totals 1,387 career digs to rank third in program history.

    Illinois State (16-10, 10-7 MVC) was right at home in the first set jumping out ahead of Southern (20-8, 10-7 MVC). SIU stayed on the heels of ISU tying the game at 11-11. The Redbirds began to pull ahead near the closing of the set not allowing the Salukis a chance to come within striking distance. ISU took the first set 25-19.

    The second set was all Southern Illinois as the Salukis did not allow Illinois State to claim a lead during the entire set. Southern held a comfortable lead in the beginning of the set going up by as many as five points. The Redbirds put in work to force the game to 24-23. The Salukis were able to hold off ISU’s momentum to tie up the match with a 25-23 win.

    The Redbirds controlled the third set keeping a comfortable distance from the Salukis winning the set 25-18.

    Southern came back swinging again in the fourth set pushing out to a 10-7 lead. ISU took a timeout to slow SIU’s progression but the Salukis kept the pace continuing to hold a lead throughout the set. Southern Illinois forced the match to five sets taking set four 25-19.

    Illinois State took a quick lead in the fifth set going up 9-4. Southern took a timeout and was able to rally to come within three points of ISU at 13-10. The Redbirds knocked in a kill at set-point leading 14-10. The Salukis answered with the next two points now only trailing 14-12. A net violation by ISU brought the game to 14-13 but Illinois State was also to put the set away at 15-13 to win the set and match.



    The Salukis out blocked Illinois State recording 14 total team blocks but fell short offensively posting a team hitting percentage of .167.

    Jessica Whitehead led the team with 20 kills. Senior Laura Thole recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 13 digs. Alysia Mayes tipped 11 kills and Taylor Pippen followed with seven.

    Southern Illinois will travel to Indiana State to wrap up their regular season schedule taking on the Sycamores at 6 p.m.
