SIU Volleyball Notes:
The Salukis opened the season 3-0 for the first time under Head Coach Sonya Locke after beating Louisiana-Monroe, Long Island University, and Murray State in the title match of the Saluki Best Inns Invitational in Davies Gym Sept. 1 & 2.
The Saluki Best Inns Invitational was the first time SIU opened a season at home since 1989.
Kristie Kemner was named MVP of the Saluki Best Inns Invitational, racking up 43 kills and 28 digs. Jenny Noel (34 kills & 24 digs) and Britten Follett (82 assists & 18 digs) were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
Starting Setter Britten Follett suffered a hairline fracture of her left ankle during the championship match against Murray State and will not play at the Orange Classic over the weekend. Her return date is undetermined at this time.
Jenny Noel tied for third all-time in attack percentage with 10 kills in 12 attempts (.833) against Long Island University.
Kristie Kemner tied for third all-time in SIU history for service aces in a match with seven against Long Island University.
SIU totaled 28 blocks in 11 games (2.54 average) over the weekend.
The Salukis will be facing Buffalo, Maryland-Baltimore, and Fordham for the first time in school history. SIU has a 1-0 record against host Syracuse, beating the Orange back in 1998.
Following the Orange Classic at Syracuse University on Sept. 8 & 9, the Salukis will begin the MVC season on the road against Evansville on Sept. 12. SIU will then travel to the Conference Challenge on Sept. 15-16 at the University of Kentucky.
The Salukis next home appearances are Sept. 29 vs. SW Missouri State at 7 p.m. and Sept. 30 vs. Wichita State at 7 p.m.
