CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois volleyball team wrapped up play this spring participating in two tournaments. In seven matches, the Salukis collected wins against Southeast Missouri, Southern Indiana, Illinois Central College and Jefferson.

"I was pleased with our play this spring," Saluki head coach Brenda Winkeler said. "And with our players ball control, especially passing. I was also impressed with our competitive attitude and business-like presence on the court."

Johannah Yutzy and Kristie Berwanger led the Salukis offensively. Yutzy, a 2005 First-team Missouri Valley Conference pick, hit .300 with 60 kills at middle blocker, while Berwanger hit .257 with 59 kills on the outside. Haley Hann added 45 kills at right side, hitting .246 for the spring.

Defensively, the Salukis were led by 2005 MVC All-Freshman team member Kristy Elswick. She tallied 112 digs, with a 2.3 passing efficiency for the spring. Berwanger, playing back row for the first time, was second with 77 digs, while Ashley Saverine added 74 with a 2.4 passing efficiency.

Yutzy led the team with five solo blocks and 17 block assists. Hann, Marita and Berwanger added three solos each, Hann posting 14 block assists, Saverine adding nine.

Marita led the team with 191 assists for the spring, averaging 27. 3 per match. Elswick also led the team with six service aces.

"Overall, our spring season was very productive both on the court and in the weight room," Winkeler said. "Strength and conditioning coach Becky Kimball has done a tremendous job training our athletes this spring."
