CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois volleyball team will begin preseason 2011 early next week as players report to camp Monday.
The team will hold a meeting and issue the players equipment Monday before holding its first practice of the season at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. The Salukis will practice twice daily over the next two weeks with daily team meetings and weight lifting sessions mixed in.
Preseason camp will culminate with the team's annual scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 20 at Davies Gym. The team will also hold a second scrimmage Wednesday, Aug. 24, at SIU Arena.
The 2011 season will be the seventh under head coach Brenda Winkeler, who holds an 85-89 mark through her first six seasons in Carbondale.
SIU looks to make its way back into the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in 2011 after missing the six-team cut in 2010. Southern has played in the Valley Tournament twice in the past four seasons.
The Salukis finished the 2010 season 14-14 overall, finishing eighth in the MVC with a 5-13 conference record. Southern returns four starters and nine letterwinners from 2010.
The Salukis will begin the season with two tournaments on the road in the Mississippi State Maroon Classic Aug. 26-27 and the Tulane Tournament Sept. 2-3. SIU will host the 32nd Annual Saluki Invitational Sept. 9-10 at SIU Arena, marking the first volleyball matches to be played in the facility since its renovation last year.
The Salukis begin MVC play Sept. 16-17 with a road swing and Northern Iowa and Bradley before playing their first matches of the season at Davies Gym Sept. 23-24 against Drake and Creighton.
