CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois volleyball team began preseason camp Monday looking to build off last season's best campaign since 2002 and second trip to the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in three years.

SIU returns five starters and its libero from a team that finished 18-12, including three all-MVC honorees in senior outside hitter Jennifer Berwanger (two-time first-team all-conference), sophomore setter Rachael Brown (2009 MVC All-Freshman Team) and senior right side Alicia Johnson (2009 MVC All-Tournament Team).

The Salukis bring in size with all three freshmen newcomers over six-foot-tall. Jessica Whitehead (6-0, MB, Murphysboro, Ill.) looks to make an impact at middle blocker with the loss of Chandra Roberson after last season. Roberson wrapped up her career as the all-time leader in block assists.

The Salukis also add Emily Less (6-0, RS, Forsyth, Ill.) on the right side and Elly Braaten (6-1, OH, Hastings, Minn.) on the outside. Less was All-State in Illinois and led her team to a regional championship as a senior and Braaten was an AAU All-American.
