This is the first weekly installment of diaries from the 2012 Saluki volleyball team.

    By Assistant Coach Todd Nelson

Welcome to the 2012 season! After working with the team throughout the Spring, we have anxiously been waiting to get everyone back into Davies Gym and officially get the season started!

On the first day back, the team was already in uniform. Unfortunately, it wasn't for a match. Instead, the team had their headshots, team photos, and our newcomers, Amy, Taylor, and Mary had some action pictures taken. We were able to get some great pictures of the team inside and outside of the SIU Arena. Once pictures were taken, it was time for every college volleyball players' favorite part of the day...Equipment hand-out! The entire SIU Athletic Department is outfitted by Under Armour and UA makes some great stuff! Needless to say, the team looks sharp with new sweats, practice shirts, socks, etc.! Before we could have our 1st official practice, the team had the prerequisite meetings to attend. Thanks to Kathy, Temeka, Liz, Andy, Bill, Steve, Kristin, and Ashley for taking the time to meet with the team, and for keeping the meetings informative and entertaining!

Once the necessary paperwork was filled out, it was time for dinner. For the first team dinner of the season, we took the team to Giant City Lodge. The Lodge is a beautiful building built back in the 1930's by the Civilian Conservation Corps. It's also a great restaurant known for it's chicken dinners and family style dining. Freshman Mary Bogdanski highly recommends the green beans if you ever get the chance to eat at Giant City Lodge! Of course, it wouldn't be a team meal if we didn't have some type of mishap. On the drive to the Lodge, Senior Laura Thole (and the car full of teammates) heard a "thomp, thomp, thomp" coming from her front passenger tire. When she got out to look, a bubble had developed on the side of the tire, rubbing against the wheel well. While she was looking at the tire and calling the coaches, the bubble burst, leaving her and her with a flat tire. Thanks to some help from a friendly passer-by, they were able to get the spare tire on and finish the drive to Giant City Lodge.

This first week's practices have been focused on defense. Serving, blocking, and back-row play will be vital in our team's success this season. We have some experience and talent on the team that will allows us to play physically along the net. Three members of the team are touching 10'3" or higher, and some of our best ball handlers are seniors. The work over the spring and throughout the summer was evident immediately. The team has had a terrific first week of practice! We finished up the week with a scrimmage at Marion High School (Thanks to SIU Volleyball alum, and Marion Head Volleyball Coach, Lauren Blumhorst!)

We couldn't be more excited for the season to begin! This team has great senior leadership and talent throughout the roster. Our freshman have stepped right in and are already carrying themselves like upperclassman. The team is hungry and has already outlined their goals for the season. We hope to see you at some of our home in Davies Gym or on the road. If you can't make it to see the Salukis in person, all of our home matches will be webcast at We appreciate everyone's support and hope to see you soon!
