This is the second weekly installment of diaries from the 2012 Saluki volleyball team.

Hello everyone! Two-a-days are over and school is starting! During this past week we focused on offense and increasing our side-out percentage at practice. During our off time in between practices we prepared for the upcoming school semester by resigning our leasing agreements and picking up our books together.
Throughout the week we participated in numerous team activities and events. On Thursday, the coaches let us take dinner into our own hands and prompted us with the idea of a `Pinterest' potluck. We decided to designate each course responsibility by position. Liberos/DS's were in charge of appetizers, setters were in charge of salads, Outsides were in charge of the main course, and Middles were in charge of dessert. We ended up with homemade mozzarella sticks, caesar salad, fruit salad, homemade pizza bagel bites, and a brownie/cookie/oreo/ice cream desert to round out a tasty meal and great team dinner.
On Friday, the athletic department threw the fall sports and new incoming freshmen a pep rally where they brought in a DJ and several inflatables for entertainment on the football field. Before the event got underway many of us decided to compete on the inflatable jousting ring and bungee runner. After we were warm from trying to knock each other down and racing, a highlight video was shown that included every sport at SIU. Then, the band started to play while the shakers, cheerleaders, us (volleyball team), and the football team ran out onto the field. Mario Moccia, Coach Ingram, and Coach Lennon gave a few speeches and then the DJ started to play and dancing broke out on the football field uniting athletes and all of the incoming freshmen that attended.
Saturday morning we participated in the Saluki Athletic Department Car Wash that was held outside of True Value. Many of us rotated jobs from holding the `car wash' signs at various locations, to rinsing off the vehicles, to soaping or drying them off. We had a great turnout and washed all shapes and sizes of vehicles. Saturday night was our second scrimmage of preseason. We traveled to Jessica Whitehead's previous stomping grounds of Murphsyboro High School where we had a great turn out of fans. We played three very competitive games and had a lot of fun. After a second week of two-a-days the coaches decided to give us Sunday off of practice to rest and prepare for our first week back to school and last week before our first preseason tournament, however Sunday night began a new tradition for Saluki Athletes... the Ice Cream Social.
The Ice Cream Social event was held in the upstairs lobby of the new Boydston Center and was put on by SAAC. The purpose of the event was to have all of the student athletes together and have them mingle in order to meet new fellow athletes that they didn't know before. Various staff members served the ice cream while the athletes all walked around and talked to each other. After about a half hour of mingling, we were all sent to the arena to be introduced to the Senior Staff Members in the athletic department, watch a few humorous videos (one being several athletic department staff members lip singing to the song "Call Me Maybe", and learn about the new Saluki Cup competition that will be taking place this Fall. Within this competition all student athletes will be randomly split up from their sport teams to form new teams of athletes from several different sports. Points will be awarded to each new team dependent upon several different categories, for example: team attendance at a designated "maroon game". The team who has the most points at the end of the fall will be awarded with Under Armour Saluki gear. I'm sure everyone is interested in getting more Saluki Under Armour gear, so the Saluki Cup should be a fun competition between all of the athletes!
We are very excited to get this season underway after seeing our strides after only two weeks of being back in the grind. We have high aspirations for this season and are going to continually work to achieve them throughout the season. Four days until game time! Go Dawgs!
