CARBONDALE, Ill.--The Southern Illinois University volleyball team has secured a spot in the 2012 Missouri Valley Conference Volleyball Championship.
The Salukis will make their 14th tournament appearance in 31 seasons, and the team's first since 2009.
“Coming in the expectations were high but there was a lot of work that needed to get done in the spring,” said SIU head coach Justin Ingram. “Thankfully we had that time as a coaching staff and we were able to develop the team and set some standards to where the program needed to be.”
With just two conference weekends remaining, positions for the 2012 MVC Volleyball Championship have been locked in by six league teams. The seedings will still be up for grabs with room for maneuvering during the final two weeks of the regular-season.
Creighton (13-1 MVC), UNI (12-3 MVC), Wichita State (11-4 MVC), SIU (9-5 MVC), Missouri State (9-6 MVC) and Illinois State (8-6 MVC) have already punched their tickets to the MVC Championship, while Evansville (3-11 MVC), Drake (3-11 MVC), Bradley (3-12 MVC) and Indiana State (1-13 MVC) have already been eliminated from championship contention.
“Right now we have two weeks of matches left and within those two weeks that will determine the rankings but we are extremely pleased to make the tournament,” said Ingram. “As the next two weeks go by we need to perform at our best not just to accelerate into the tournament but to make sure we can get the highest seed possible.”
The Salukis will host UNI and Bradley this weekend in their final home stand before closing out their regular season at Illinois State and Indiana State, Nov. 16-17.
