CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University volleyball coach Brenda Winkeler has been reassigned to another position within the athletic department, the school announced Friday.

In seven seasons as head coach, Winkeler compiled a 94-107 overall record and 41-85 mark in Missouri Valley Conference matches. Her 2011 team finished 9-18 with a 3-15 record in the MVC.

"We appreciate Brenda's service to our department," said Director of Athletics Mario Moccia. "She and her teams always represented our University in a first-class manner."

Academically, Winkeler's 2010 team held a 3.35 cumulative grade point average, earning the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award for a sixth-straight season. Her program produced 16 MVC Scholar-Athlete honorees during her tenure.

Competitively, two of Winkeler's teams qualified for the MVC Tournament (2007 and 2009) with identical 7-11 records and sixth-place finishes. Eight players earned either First or Second-Team All-Conference honors.

Winkeler's tenure at Southern began in 2005 when she succeeded Saluki Hall of Famer Sonya Locke. Prior to SIU, Winkeler recorded an 82-72 record in five years at Eastern Illinois.

A Bartelso, Ill., native, Winkeler graduated from Breese Mater Dei High School, received her undergraduate degree in physical education from Millikin University in 1984, and went on to the University of Illinois, where she earned her master's degree in educational administration in 1991.

Moccia said a search for Winkeler's successor will begin immediately.
