Women’s Tennis Wins Four MVC Individual Titles
10/10/2016 | 2:43:00 | Women's Tennis
EVANSVILLE, IND. – Southern Illinois University welcomes home four new Missouri Valley Conference trophies today. The women's tennis team won three singles titles and one doubles title on the final day of the fall tournament.
The day started with doubles play where the Salukis would capture one of the potential three. Senior Polina Dozortseva and newcomer Tereza Klocova were able to out match their opponent, winning, 8-4. The No. 3 doubles title is the first doubles MVC championship SIU has won since 2013.
In singles the dawgs really thrived, winning three out of the possible five titles they competed for today. Dozortseva, Klocova, and Yana Golovkina won from the No. 5, 6, and 7 singles spots. All three girls won in straight sets. This was title number two for both Klocova and Dozortseva on the day. They are the third doubles team to also each win a singles title in the same year, the first to do so since 1998. Golovkina made some history of her own winning her second consecutive MVC singles title. Last year the junior won the No. 6 singles championship and this year she has been crowned the No. 7 singles champ. Golovkina is the fourth person in Saluki history to win back-to-back titles.
"It was our team goal to get 2 titles and we doubled that," SIU head coach Audra Anderson said. "I'm proud of how each and every player fought and played with their heart win or lose. They showed me the best tennis so this fall."
SIU's four fall titles were the most of any valley team. Drake and Illinois State both won one doubles and one singles title a piece to tie for second most. The Salukis conclude the weekend with 17 total singles wins and 7 doubles wins.
The team will have minimal down time as they will be back in action this upcoming Thursday at the ITA Central Regional Championships in Minneapolis.
