WATERLOO, Iowa - The men's cross country team ran an average eight-kilometer time of 25 minutes 42 seconds on Saturday at the NCAA Pre-Nationals - a time that must come down for SIU to do well at the Missouri Valley Championships in two weeks.
The Salukis, who ran against such top-ranked schools in the country like #1 Stanford to place 32nd in the 35 team race, were led once again by sophomore Joe Byrne with a time of 24:59. Byrne finished 106th among the field of 238 in the Purple Race. Senior Doron Giat followed in 132nd place with a time of 25:16.
Northern Irishman, Diarmuid Grant, placed 164th with a time of 25:37, while junior Tony LaChiana notched a time of 26:15 in the eight-kilometer run. Freshmen Hunter Sheldon and Kyle Monroe finished with times of 26:22 and 27:35, respectively.
Junior Eli Baker, from local Marion, Ill., did not compete due to injury.
SIU will return to action in two weeks on Nov. 1 at the MVC Championships held in Des Moines, Iowa. Results can be found at www.SIUSalukis.com.
