SIU tied with Fairfield University for the 22nd-best combined GPA among NCAA DI schools.
The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (3.510) boasts the 22nd-best combined grade point average among NCAA Division I schools, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced Wednesday.
SIU's 3.51 GPA tied with Fairfield University for No. 22 on the WBCA Academic Top-25 Honor Roll. The Salukis are one of three Missouri Valley Conference teams to earn inclusion on the list, and are joined by the Northern Iowa Panthers (No. 8, 3.609) and the Drake Bulldogs (No. 9, 3.60 GPA).
It marks the fourth time since the 2001-02 season that Southern has garnered a spot on the WBCA Academic Top-25 list, and the first time they have done so since the 2007-08 season. SIU's cumulative Team GPA of 3.51 is the highest it has been of the now four times that the Salukis have earned a spot on the list.
"This is a special honor for our program," said fifth-year head coach Cindy Stein. "Our staff, especially Adesuwa Ebomwonyi, were phenomenal in their support of our student-athletes."
The WBCA Academic Top 25 recognizes NCAA Division I, II and III; NAIA and junior/community college women's basketball teams across the nation that carry the highest combined GPAs inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season. The 2016-17 season is the 22nd in which the WBCA has compiled the honor rolls.
"The WBCA family is committed to the student-athlete experience and celebrates these teams that have demonstrated excellence in the classroom," said WBCA Executive Director Danielle Donehew. "This year's WBCA Academic Top 25 is a powerful list of teams and their head coaches who have winning cultures that prepare their student-athletes for success in life."
A spot on the WBCA's annual honor roll was the culmination of what was already a banner year academically for the Salukis. SIU's Kim Nebo graduated with a 4.0 GPA and was one of four recipients of the Missouri Valley Conference Postgraduate Scholarship. She will attend the University of Houston's College of Pharmacy this fall. The Katy, Texas native also earned the MVC President's Council Academic Excellence Award, the highest academic award given out by the league. She was the first Saluki to earn the recognition since Jordyn Courier in 2014.
The Salukis also placed 13 on the MVC Honor Roll, their most honorees in a single season since at least 2005.
