Baseball storms back for 18-13 win over SIUE

Josh Ohl hit a home run to lead off the game for Edwardsville, but the Salukis (10-2) countered with nine runs in the first two innings. The scoring began with a three-run first, when SIUE starter Quinn Waterhouse walked three, hit three more and tossed two wild pitches.
Southern exploded for six more runs in the second inning, highlighted by J.T. Weber's three-run blast to left center. The homer was his fifth of the year through 12 games and pushed SIU's lead to eight.
The Cougars (6-5), who had their five-game winning streak come to an end, put up a six-spot of their own in the top of the third to trim the deficit to 9-7. They followed with three more in the fifth to take a 10-9 lead.
The Salukis, who pounded out 14 hits on the day, put up three runs apiece in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to regain control of the game.
Weber led SIU with three hits, including a homer and a double, and drove in three runs. Lead-off hitter Cody Cleveland had two hits, two walks and scored four runs. The top four hitters in SIU's lineup were 9-for-19 with four extra-base hits.
SIUE's six hurlers combined to walk 10 batters, hit three and unleash five wild pitches. SIU's staff of four pitchers gave up a dozen earned runs. Right-hander Jake Combs (1-0) allowed three runs in two innings to pick up his first-career win.
The Salukis recorded their season high in runs scored, had 27 baserunners on the day and ran at will, stealing six bases — the most since Feb. 15, 2020 vs. Jackson State.
SIU returns to action tomorrow at Arkansas State.
