Salukis Bats Explode Late In 10-2 Win Over SLU

"Excited to see us pitch, defend, and hit like that," said head coach Jen Sewell following the win. "All three pitchers threw really well and the defense made some nice outs."
Hannah Hockerman, Elliott Stinson, and Madi Eberle all made appearances in the circle for Southern as they held SLU to just two runs that came off a pair of solo home runs. Hockerman made the start and went two innings while giving up one run before Stinson threw the next four innings giving up one run as well before Eberle got the save going three up and three down in the seventh. The trio gave up just one walk on the day.Â
With the game tied at 2-2 in the sixth inning and bases, redshirt freshman Addi Baker blasted a deep shot to center field for not only her first home run of the season but a grand slam to give SIU a 6-2 lead late in the game. A season ago, Baker hit two home runs while making 11 starts in the Salukis first 12 games before her season came to an end due to injury.Â
"Really happy for Addi Baker," said Sewell following the win. "I think she will get going. She's put in the work to come all the way back and she deserves to see it pay off."
After having a very productive week for the Salukis during their 4-0 stretch against SEMO and Indiana State, Elizabeth Warwick continued to stay hot in the leadoff spot as she got on base in all five plate appearances going 3-for-3 with two doubles, a home run, five RBIs, and three runs scored. Warwick's home run was her second of the season as she currently leads Southern with 12 doubles, .396 batting average, and .521 on-base percentage while starting in all 33 games.Â
Warwick got the Salukis going early in the game with a pair of doubles in her first two at-bats as she drove in the Salukis first run and proceeded to score the second to take a 2-1 lead in the third on a Rylie Hamilton ground out.Â
"Liz Warwick is absolutely putting on a show right now," emphasized coach Sewell. "But there was some all around great stuff out of that game. That's a good game to start a road stretch."Up next for the Salukis is a trip to Evansville for a three-game series beginning this Friday at 5 pm. Southern will play on Saturday at 2 PM and Sunday at noon to finish the series.Â
