PANORA, Iowa - The Southern Illinois women's golf team stands in seventh place after round one of the Missouri Valley Conference preview hosted by Drake at the Lake Panorama National Golf Course in Panora, Iowa. Other teams participating in the preview include Bradley, Creighton, Drake, Missouri State, Northern Iowa, South Dakota, South Dakota State and Wichita State.
The Salukis shot 342 in the first round, just ahead of South Dakota State and South Dakota, and trailing conference rival Creighton. Missouri State and Drake are tied for first place after the first day of competition, both teams hitting 323.
"We're struggling right now," said head coach Diane Daugherty. "We have to start playing smarter."
Lauren May and Alisha Matthews both shot an 83, to lead the Salukis in the opening day sitting tied for 15th. Kate Laegeler sits in 31st place after day one of the MVC Preview, while Alex Anderson is in 38th place. Freshman Meg Gilley shot a 90 in her second competition of the season, sitting tied for 41st.
"This is a fast green, and we are being too aggressive," Daugherty said. "We need to be a lot more mentally prepared. We should be thinking our way through the green."
The Salukis will continue action at the MVC Preview tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m.
