PANORA, Iowa - The Southern Illinois University women's golf team finished in seventh place at the MVC preview in Panora, Iowa. The tournament was hosted by Drake and consisted of Bradley, Drake, Wichita State, Missouri State, Northern Iowa, and Creighton, along with non-conference opponents South Dakota and South Dakota State.
The Salukis shot a 669, eight strokes behind No. 6 place Creighton. Freshman Alisha Matthews led Southern Illinois with 159 (83-76) tying for sixth place, Lauren May followed behind with 165 (83-82) tied for 17th. Meg Gilley rounded out the SIU lineup with a 180 (90-90) putting her tied for 49th place. Braidy Hood competed individually, posting a 158 (79-79) to tie for third place.
"We played a little better today," said head coach Diane Daugherty. "We scored better and Alisha had a great round with her 76."
Bradley won the tournament with a 637, three strokes in front of Drake who hosted the MVC preview. Wichita State finished third with a score of 648, while Missouri State grabbed the No. 4 spot with a 649. The Panthers of Northern Iowa shot a 659 for fifth place. Creighton shot a 661 with the help of Elizabeth Conry's hole-in-one, putting them in sixth place just ahead of the Salukis. South Dakota State held on for eighth place with a 674 and South Dakota rounded out the tournament with a ninth-place 714.
"We're still not where we want to be, but at least we're heading in the right direction," Daugherty said. "We lost a couple of battles, but we still haven't lost the war."
The Salukis will finish up fall play on Oct. 28-29 at the Kent Youel Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii. Southern Illinois will pick back up with their spring schedule in February.
