Women's golf in second place after day one at Illini Spring Classic

URBANA, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University women's golf team is in second place after the first day of the Illini Spring Classic.
The tournament was supposed to begin with a 36-hole round today, but was cut down to only 18 holes due to weather conditions.
"It was a really tough day at the golf course," said head coach Diane Daugherty. "We were scheduled to play 36 and we just played 18 because the wind chill didn't get above 33 with about 24 mile-an-hour winds gusting to probably about 30. So, it was a tough day."
Despite the weather setbacks, the Salukis are only two strokes out of the lead behind host school Illinois.
"U of I shot 319 and we shot 321, so we're two shots out of first," said Daugherty. "I feel good about that. Everybody is bunched right behind us, so tomorrow is going to be the determining day. We're scheduled to go 36 tomorrow, but it depends again on the weather and the frost delay we're going to have in the morning."
Christine Zoerlein led the Salukis with a 78 through round one and is currently tied for second place overall.
Braidy Hood is tied for sixth with a round-one 79. Lauren May finished the day tied for 16th with an 81. Rounding out SIU's scoring in the play-five, count-four tournament was Kelly Gerlach with an 83 for a 30th-place tie.
Also competing for SIU was Danielle Kaufman, who finished tied for 48th with an 86 on day one.
The tournament is scheduled to continue tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m., barring weather setbacks.
"I think we'll play better tomorrow and I know we will play better tomorrow if this weather cooperates," said Daugherty. "We're in a really good position right now."
