NORMAL, Ill. - In a shortened Missouri Valley Conference championship, the SIU women's golf team finished sixth overall led by a tied for third place finish by Cassie Rushing.
Cassie Rushing was the only Saluki to finish in the top ten with her combined round of 36 holes coming in at 151. She finished round two with an impressive 73 while round one, the freshman from Marion, Ill. tallied a 78. Rushing's performance also earned her All-Conference honors and the only Saluki to earn the honors.
Rain forced the championships to scale back to just 36 holes on Saturday at the Weibring Golf Course instead of the intended two rounds, one of 36 and one of 18 that would have spanned over a two day period.
"We played well but just not good enough to win the tournament," Head coach Diane Daugherty said. "I am proud of the girls and what they have accomplished this season."
As a team, the Salukis shot a combined two round score of 633 (324, 309), five strokes behind fifth place Bradley.
Illinois State took home the tournament crown shooting a staggering 597 (305, 292) to beat second place Wichita State by 19 strokes.
Alisha Matthews came in next for the Salukis with her 22nd place finish with a 158 (82, 76) while Shaina Rennegarbe finished closely behind in a tie for 23rd place with a 159 (79, 80).
Margaret Gilley finished 38th overall (85, 80) with a combined score of 165 while Ashleigh Rushing rounded out the team in a tie for 45th (87, 83) with a 170.
All five golfers in the Salukis lineup will return for the 2011-2012 season.
