SIU closes fall season with third place finish at Lady Red Wolves Classic

JONESBORO, Ark. - The Southern Illinois women's golf team wrapped up play at the Lady Red Wolves Classic on Tuesday, earning a third place finish to conclude the fall season. The Salukis shot 308 on the final day and finished five shots behind second place. SIU's total score of 907 ranks as the fifth best 54-hole score in school history.
"I know we lost, but we didn't lose," head coach Alexis Mihelich said. "We got outplayed and that's different. Both teams got it going low and we played consistent. We dropped a 78, but at the end of 54-holes, we fell short"
Southern placed four golfers in the top-10, led by Kristie Yang. Yang had one of her best tournaments of the season, finishing in fifth place to lead SIU. The sophomore ended the final day by carding a 76. Hanna Netisingha, Sun Young Jung, and Alice Ho each earned a share of sixth place. Brooke Cusumano took 13th place, while Mattie Lindner was 15th and Morgan Reimler placed 23rd.
"I'm so proud of Kristie," Mihelich said. "She is always the dark horse or wild card. She finally kept it together for three rounds. She proved to herself that she can play number one on this team."
With the conclusion of play on Tuesday, the Salukis close out the fall season with a pair of team tournament wins and two individual tournament wins.
"I think this is bittersweet because it's the motivation we need for the next four months when we enter the off season. It will keep us on our toes to keep our games sharp come mid-February"
The team returns to action on Feb. 12 at the Eagle Invitational.
