Southern tied for sixth after first day of the Redbird Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - After playing the opening two rounds at the Redbird Invitational in Bloomington, Ill. on Sunday, the Southern Illinois University women's golf team is currently tied for sixth place, with one round left to play.
Southern opened the day by shooting 308 in the first round of play. Kristie Yang led SIU in the first round, carding a 76 to start the tournament. Hanna Netisingha and Brooke Cusumano each tallied scores of 77, while Sun Young Jung and Mattie Lindner shot a 78.
The second round saw SIU finish with a score of 313, placing them in a tie for sixth-place with Ohio after day one. Netisingha tallied another round of 77, while Jung looked strong with her score of 78 in her first collegiate tournament.
"I was really impressed with my freshman's performance to come out and score in both rounds," head coach Alexis Mihelich said. "Usually there are some nerves, but I don't think anything phased her."
Playing as an individual, Xianmei Jin had the best day of any Saluki golfer, recording a score of 77 in the first round and 75 in the second round. After her day one performance, Jin currently is tied for 12th place. Also competing as an individual, Alice Ho finished the day shooting scores of 80 in both rounds.
"The individual is leading the team at the moment so I am very impressed with Xianmei," Mihelich said. "If she has another solid round tomorrow, she will be in the line-up for the next event."
With one round left to play on Monday and nine shots out of the lead, SIU will look to make some big moves in the first tournament of the season.
"We are only nine shots out of the lead," Mihelich said. "This team can go really low. If we bring our A-game, we can still be in contention down the stretch."
SIU will tee off the final round tomorrow morning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
