Women's golf sweeps team and individual titles at SIUE Intercollegiate

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's golf team repeated as both team and individual champions at the SIUE Doubletree Intercollegiate.
The Salukis won by 21 strokes and freshman Amy Lee won the individual title by two strokes. All five Salukis finished in the top-16 individually.
"It was an exciting final round to see," head coach Alexis Mihelich said. "Amy played a solid final day. She had a total of 27 putts on the round, and that's exactly what we have been working on. She needed to be more confident on the greens, and she did just that today."
The Salukis dominated the tournament, shooting 10 strokes better than any other team in both rounds. Southern led the tournament in Par-3 scoring, Par-4 scoring, birdies and pars.
SIU beat MVC foes Evansville and Creighton by 45 and 46 strokes, respectively, in the 36-hole tournament.
Amy Lee led the tournament in pars (23) and Par-5 scoring (+1) to earn her first collegiate win in just her third tournament. Cassie Rushing (160) finished four shots behind Lee and finished third overall. Ashleigh Rushing (166) tied with Shaina Rennegarbe (166) for ninth overall, and Mattie Lindner (168) tied for 16th. Alexis Gatton (175) tied for 35th competing as an individual.
Lee shot a career-best round (79) in the opening round on Monday and then bested that mark by four strokes on Tuesday to claim the tournament title. Lee's second-round score was the best in the field by two strokes. Her two-round total (154) was one stroke better than former Saluki Alisha Matthews's total last year that won the individual crown.
Up next, the Salukis travel to the APSU Intercollegiate October 15-16 in Clarksville, Tenn.
